After I build a web site going through the code and sweeping out the dust bunnies is a satisfying way to create significant improvements in the performance and make a web build as solid as possible. Thanks to lots of handy tools available there are many ways to test and fix the performance of your website and I will sum up a few of those options.

Here is a short list of what I consider some really helpful tools to develop a website. Combining just a few different open source applications will allow you to have pixel precision control of your design. Most of these tools run as plugins for the internet browser Firefox The Web Developer Plug-In is a great way to be able break apart the design of a live web site and diagnose how the css controls the layout. Once you have it installed you will have this added to your browser toolbars.

If you want to make friends with all of the search engine spider bots crawling around it is a good idea to make a nice sitemap. The sitemap is something that Google developed back in 2005 with a protocol that helps the robots know your site is ready for the search engines and is easily crawled. Read the rest of this entry »
